Spring Clean Your Diet

Now that all the Christmas festivities are over and the New Year is well underway it is time to spring clean your diet!  Making healthier eating a part of your daily routine will help you to feel better, have more energy and will help you to reach your ideal weight.

A good starting point is to keep a food diary.  Write down everything you eat and drink for a few days and you will very quickly see what keys areas you need to target.  Are you eating too many takeaways, not having enough fruit and vegetables or simply eating too many snacks?

Top tips to spring clean your diet:

  • Make out a weekly menu which will help you to stick to your targets e.g. if you need to eat more vegetables you need to plan the meals they will be in, otherwise they are unlikely to be eaten
  • Make a list before you go to the Supermarket and only buy what is on the list.  If there are no tempting snacks in your shopping trolley it will be easier to stick to your healthy eating plan
  • Try to shop just once per week.  The more times you pop to the shops to buy food the more likely you are to make unnecessary purchases
  • Try to include breakfast in your daily meal plan to get your day off to a good start and to improve your concentration in the morning.  Healthy breakfast options include; fruit and fruit juices, cereal with low-fat milk, wholemeal toast with low-fat spread
  • Aim to eat the recommended 5 portions per day of fruit and vegetables.  If you do this you will feel fuller and are less likely to be tempted by unhealthier food options
  • Drink more to feel in good health.  Aim for 6 to 8 glasses per day.  Water is the best drink.  It is cheap, convenient and calorie-free
  • Cut back on your alcohol intake
  • Be as active as you can!  This will help you to feel more energetic, feel better about yourself and feel less stressed

Finally, enjoy your food and don’t forget to reward yourself when your targets are achieved!
